Our Stories

Youth and their family units

We believe in the power of education as a source of hope for a better tomorrow

and recognize that many factors influence a child's ability to learn.

We provide assistance when we see an opportunity to improve a student's physical and/or mental wellbeing .

This includes nutrition, housing, and the provision of other basic needs.

Mom Fleeing Domestic Violence

MOM FLEEING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

A mom, her 4 children, and her elderly mother moved to Austin with very limited resources to flee an unsafe domestic situation. The mom had saved money for the move and used this to help pay a deposit and first month's rent for a place to live. She immediately found night-shift work, doing her best to make ends meet. A counselor at the childrens' school learned from one of the children that while the family had a roof over their heads, they had no furniture except for one bed. C2C collected beds, dressers, a sofa, kitchen table, desk, bedding, and other household items to help them get established. Our community also provided toys, books, and bikes for the children, who were overjoyed when they were delivered to the house.

Mom Facing Eviction

MOM FACING EVICTION

A mom and her children were facing eviction due to $8K in back rent. This exhorbitant sum was the result of the family's housing subsidy having been revoked after the proper documentation could not be provided to the House Authority of the City of Austin. Unfortunately, this paperwork had been stolen and working through the system to get it replaced was overwhelming for this woman who was working to support her family and also learning a new trade (welding) to help find a better career path.

A case worker who knew this mom for many years described her as a hard working individual who simply was overwhelmed and depressed.

Legal aid provided by another non-profit was able to help this mom work through the bureaucracy and find some financial assistance. C2C joined this effort and provided a portion of the money needed to keep this mom and her children with a roof over their heads.

Afghan Refuge Family

AFGHAN REFUGEE FAMILY

The need and opportunity for this project was recognized in late 2022 by one of our C2C founders when she was volunteering as a tutor for an Afghan refugee family housed on the grounds of an Austin theological seminary. She noticed an unused and neglected garden plot and suspected that the family, who had farmed in Afghanistan, would appreciate the opportunity to grow some of their own food here in Texas. After discussions with the various stakeholders, C2C gained approval to undertake the project.

C2C coordinated the work of several groups to make this project become a reality. We owe a huge shoutout to the Green Corn Project for selecting this as one of their dig-in projects for the spring and bringing a group of UT students to assist with the work. Ultimately, GCP and its volunteers not only cleaned out the existing plot, but they built two new beds closer to the residence, hauled in dirt, and planted seedlings.

The work to design and build enclosures for the new beds was untaken by two Westlake High School students and their parents. We are extremely grateful to the McCoy's Building Supply located in Bee Cave for donating all of the materials need for the project.

The children were excited throughout the project and immediately began watering the garden once the project was complete. The family continues to care for the new garden and also shares the original plot with students living at the seminary.

Mom Newly On Her Feet

FAMILY WITH NEW HOME

A mom with a fresh start and a new job at Tesla moved her family to a new apartment closer to the plant. C2C provided gently used mattresses, boxsprings, and frames to ensure that every family member had a place to sleep. Several community members stepped up to help us transport the mattresses.

Teen Mom

TEEN MOM

A middle school student with an infant was in need of items for the baby and herself. The girl lived with her father and did not have maternal support.

C2C immediately responded and provided a bed, crib, stroller, sheets, infant and post-partum clothes, and other basic needs.
